Shinano()was anaircraft carrierbuilt by theImperial Japanese Navy(IJN) duringWorld War II, the largest such built up to that time.Laid downin May 1940 as the third of theYamato-classbattleships,Shinano‘s partially complete hull was ordered to be converted to a carrier following Japan’s disastrous loss of fourfleet carriersat theBattle of Midwayin mid-1942. Her conversion was still not finished in November 1944 when she was ordered to sail from theYokosuka Naval ArsenaltoKure Naval Baseto completefitting outand transfer a load of 50Yokosuka MXY7Ohkarocket-propelledkamikazeflying bombs. She was sunk en route, 10 days aftercommissioning, on 29 November 1944, by fourtorpedoesfrom theU.S. NavysubmarineArcherfish.
