TheNational Revolutionary Army(NRA), sometimes shortened toRevolutionary Army() before 1928, and asNational Army() after 1928, was the military arm of theKuomintang(KMT, or the Chinese Nationalist Party) from 1925 until 1947 in theRepublic of China. It also became theregular armyof the ROC during the KMT’s period ofparty rulebeginning in 1928. It was renamed theRepublic of China Armed Forcesafter the1947 Constitution, which institutedcivilian control of the military.

Originally organized withSovietaid as a means for the KMT to unify China during theWarlord Era, the National Revolutionary Army fought major engagements in theNorthern Expeditionagainst the ChineseBeiyang Armywarlords, in theSecond Sino-Japanese War(19371945) against theImperial Japanese Armyand in theChinese Civil Waragainst thePeople’s Liberation Army.
